VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

Parents Needed for Focus the Nation Events at School

On January 31st, French American International School and International High School will take part in a national program entitled Focus the Nation.

Activities will be taking place throughout the day and will involve students from Pre-K through 12th grades at French American and International.

In order for this to take place we need parent volunteers to help set up the educational activities and help chaperon the students as they participate in the day-long activities.

Parent volunteers are needed!  We ask that parents volunteer in the evening of Wednesday the 30th and throughout the day on the 31st.

If you can come and help for a 2 – 3 hour shift that would be terrific.

We need parents:

Wednesday January 30 from 6:00 – 7:30 for set up in the Gym (set up will follow the screening of the "2% Solution" webcast in MPR5) (10 parents needed from MS and High School)

Thursday January 31st  (all parent volunteers should report to the weight room in the Gym)
Shift 1    7:45 – 9:00 (10 parents needed from LS, MS and High School)
Shift 2    10:00 – 12:00 (8 parents from LS, MS and High School)
Shift 3    12:45 – 2:30 (15 parents from LS, MS and High School)

If you can volunteer, please contact David Fierberg at 558-2017 or davidf@frenchamericansf.org

Thank you.

CLIMATE ACTION PLEDGE

The text below is what middle and high school students have decided are the 10 top priority action items they want to be able to commit to during our Focus The Nation Media Event.

  1. Talking about what I know about climate change to my neighbors, friends, and family
  2. Reducing the number of miles I drive by walking, biking, carpooling, and taking mass transit (carpooling just 2 days a week saves 1,590 lbs of CO2 every year)
  3. Buying locally grown and produced organic foods (it reduces the amount of CO2 emissions linked to growing and transporting my food)
  4. Recycling and buying recycled produts (saves 2,400 lbs of CO2 every year)
  5. Using reusable cloth bags, and avoiding plastic bags and other packaging (cutting down my garbage by 10% sabes 1,200 lbs of CO2 every year)
  6. Planting one tree every year (2,000 lbs of CO2 are absorbed over a tree's lifetime)
  7. Setting my thermostat 2 degrees cooler in winter and 2 degrees warmer in summer (saves up tp 2,000lbs of CO2 every year)
  8. Turning off unnecessary lights and unplugging idle electronic devices (saves up tp 1,000lbs of CO2 every year)
  9. Switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs (each CFL bulb saes 150 lbs of CO2 every year)
  10. Installing low-flow showerheads and faucet heads (saves 350 lbs of CO2 every year)
As a reference, we emit on average 15,000 lbs of CO2 every year.

Students do NOT have to commit to any of these action items. But if they do choose to commit to any or all of the above actions, please help them honor their commitment, perhaps even by taking the pledge yourself. Those students who choose to commit to just one or all of these actions will sign a giant pledge banner on Focus The Nation Day! Check out what it looks like!!
