- Climate Action Pledge: Following are what middle and high school students have decided are the 10 top priority action items they want to be able to commit to during our Focus The Nation Media Event:
- Talking about what I know about climate change to my neighbors, friends, and family
- Reducing the number of miles I drive by walking, biking, carpooling, and taking mass transit (carpooling just 2 days a week saves 1,590 lbs of CO2 every year)
- Buying locally grown and produced organic foods (it reduces the amount of CO2 emissions linked to growing and transporting my food)
- Recycling and buying recycled produts (saves 2,400 lbs of CO2 every year)
- Using reusable cloth bags, and avoiding plastic bags and other packaging (cutting down my garbage by 10% sabes 1,200 lbs of CO2 every year)
- Planting one tree every year (2,000 lbs of CO2 are absorbed over a tree's lifetime)
- Setting my thermostat 2 degrees cooler in winter and 2 degrees warmer in summer (saves up tp 2,000lbs of CO2 every year)
- Turning off unnecessary lights and unplugging idle electronic devices (saves up tp 1,000lbs of CO2 every year)
- Switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs (each CFL bulb saes 150 lbs of CO2 every year)
- Installing low-flow showerheads and faucet heads (saves 350 lbs of CO2 every year)
As a reference, we emit on average 15,000 lbs of CO2 every year.
Talk about this pledge with your family and think about what you are ready to commit to. You don't have to participate to any of these actions, but if you do, it's important to honor your commitment. Those who commit to just one or all of these actions will sign our giant pledge banner on Focus The Nation Day! Click here to check out what it looks like!!
