Hooked On Hoops

Basketball Clinics created by Charlene Murphy (International High School Head

women’s basketball coach, former NCAA Division II assistant women’s basketball

coach and former Division II collegiate player) and Alexandre Iljas (International High

School assistant varsity boys basketball coach, IHS alum and standout athlete).

These clinics are intended to develop skills of both the novice player and the student

that is already dedicated to the sport. These are basketball clinics of rigor and quality,

designed not only to prepare athletes for high school competition, but to engage and

develop the foundations of comprehension and enjoyment for elementary and middle

school students as well.  Clinics include focus on: perfecting shooting form,

transferring speed, agility and power to the court and introducing offensive and

defensive concepts.

Hooked On Hoops Coaches

Camp Director Charlene Murphy

International High School Girls Varsity Basketball Coach and French American International School Girls Basketball Director

Coach Murphy believes our youth needs to receive higher quality coaching, training and mentoring for the sport of youth basketball to continue to grow and prosper. She believes that far too many athletes never reach their potential because they did not receive proper coaching and positive reinforcement during their early development stage. She founded Hooked On Hoops because she wanted there to be a basketball academy where young athletes could have that opportunity. Coach Murphy’s basketball experience consists of playing four-years of Division II college basketball at Humboldt State University, in addition to assistant coaching stints at Chico State University, San Francisco State University and Skyline College. As a Varsity High School Girls basketball Head Coach, she led Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton to the Division V Northern California Finals in 2004-2005. More recently, she had led International High School to a league title in 2007-2008.  As the quality of coaching improves, so does the quality of play and players.

Coach Alexandre Iljas

International High School Boys Varsity Assistant Basketball Coach, IHS Alum and Standout-athlete

Coach Iljas graduated from International High School in 2008.  An injury in his senior year forced him to watch his team from the bench for the rest of the season.  Though he could not play, he was still determined to help his team.  His dedication and passion for the game fueled him to observe the game from the sideline and help the coaching staff in any way that he could.  After enrolling at the University of San Francisco, Coach Iljas decided that he wanted to give back to the International community.  He did this by helping out the Athletic Program in any way that he could and he eventually became an Assistant Coach to the International High School Boys Varsity Team.  Considered by some as the “heart and soul of the team” when he played, Coach Iljas has transferred his love for basketball to a number of students.

Coach Leslie Walker

Coach Walker joins Hooked On Hoops after playing three years of basketball as a walk-on shooting guard at her alma mater University of San Francisco.  She is also the assistant girls varsity basketball coach at International H.S and for all girls teams at French American International School.  Coach Walker brings a tremendous amount of experience, energy and is a excellent fundamentals coach.  She believes that teaching the game's fundamentals and attention to detail at a young age sets the players up for success in their future.  Looking back on her playing career, Coach Walker remembers all of the positive role models and mentors who helped her reach her potential and she wants to return the favor and share her love for the game.
