FAILING A CLASS / REMEDIATING A GRADE OF D or F / GRADE CHANGES
A close reading of the INTERNATIONAL Grading Equivalency Grid reveals that it is quite difficult to actually fail a class. Only students who do very little work or who are absent for long periods will receive a Grade F and no credit. The Grade D is not—strictly speaking—“ failing,” but represents extreme cause for concern. The minimal grade point rating of 1.0 will effectively sabotage a student’s overall GPA. Furthermore, a single D grade on a transcript will eliminate a student from the University of California application process.
Any grade on an end-of-semester report card reflecting a D grade performance or below will be highlighted before being sent to parents. A letter from the Principal will accompany the report card, explaining the implications for the college application process and graduation and the possibility of taking a summer class to remediate the grade.
If a summer class is taken, 1) the course must be taken at an accredited institution and approved by the International registrar before the student enrolls; 2) the grade awarded by the summer institution replaces the failing grade on the student’s transcript but will be annotated; 3) the transcript from the external institution must be sent to our registrar and will be attached to the final INTERNATIONAL transcript.
Three or more failures in the following subjects may result in non-promotion to the next grade level: English, Math, History, Science, and Modern Languages.
In accordance with UC rules, no grade of C or better may be re-mediated by re-taking a class from an outside institution to improve one’s GPA.
Any grade changes or summer work must be completed by one calendar year after the last day of the relevant grading period.
If a grade change occurs, the report card is adjusted, reprinted, signed by the Principal and the teacher concerned, and a copy is sent to the family. Another copy is filed with the Registrar.
