This class is designed for students continuing their French study. The goal is to help students be well prepared for the coming academic year. Note to students: First of all, it is important to take heed of the recommendations that your French language and French math teachers make at the end of the year. If it is suggested that certain bases need improvement or remediated, your objective during the summer will be to take time to re-assimilate the content you missed.
French for Beginners
Offered Session 1 (July 7-25)

This program is designed for students with no to limited French knowledge. The goal of this course include the acquisition of communication skills in spoken French in everyday situations as well as an understanding and knowledge of French life, its customs and culture. Writing, listening, speaking and reading skills are developed in a variety of methodologies including the use of printed dialogues, simulations, role-playing, and a range of written and oral exercises.
Continuing Second Language French
Offered Session 2 (July 28- August 15)

This course is designed for students that have had previous French Language exposure. Building on the goals of our French for beginners class, there is added emphasis on the international aspects of the French Language. Manners and customs of France and other francophone countries are studied. The course utilizes a wide range of oral and written techniques to build and improve speaking and reading skills; to enhance vocabulary; to teach methods of oral analysis of documents and texts; and to learn how to manipulate grammar ad language structures.
Beginning Spanish
Offered Session 1 (July 7-25)

Instruction in this class will provide an introduction to the basic key elements of Spanish which will enable the student to develop verbal, listening and writing skills. Students will also learn about the aspects of Spanish & Latin American culture.
Intermediate Spanish Readiness
Offered Session 2 (July 28- August 15)
9AM - Noon
This course will cover grammar, written comprehension/skills, and vocabulary to help provide a foundation for further Spanish language studies. Students will work in the present tense, progressive present, past tense, and near future. Students will write short essays about subjects such as family, school, and weekend activities. Additionally, this course is designed to provide insight into Hispanic culture while also emphasizing the diversity among Spanish-speaking countries.
Beginning Mandarin
Offered Session 1 (July 7-25)

The main objective is language acquisition through a rigorous academic curriculum integrated with Chinese culture. The students will acquire the practical skills to communicate in Chinese for everyday purposes while at the same time building a solid foundation for further studies of the language. This foundation encompasses learning: the building blocks of Chinese characters, the Pinyin romanization system, basic word order, and calligraphy. The students will acquire a natural accent and feel for the language. The cultural component of the class includes learning about Chinese holidays and customs and developing an appreciation of Chinese history and art. The material is presented through various effective language teaching methods including: total physical response and mini stories, the audio-lingual method, writing and performing skits, and various songs and games.
Success in this course requires that the students stay very organized in and out of class and participate enthusiastically every class period. Students should have: a binder for Chinese and a fine-tip black roller ball pen,.
